War Memorial Park Association

From 1947 to 1987, the War Memorial Park Association maintained, operated and actually owned War Memorial Park.  In 1988, the park was deeded to the City of Martinsburg and has since been operated and maintained by the Martinsburg-Berkeley County Parks & Recreation Board.  The War Memorial Park Association has remained in place to serve as a “friends of the park” organization to specifically raise funds for capital improvement projects at War Memorial Park.  These funds compliment funds from Parks and Recreation operating budget as well as grants received through parks & recreation.  Many improvements accomplished over the past 21 years are a direct result of funds from the War Memorial Park Association.  The parks & recreation department could not have budgeted enough funds without the War Memorial Park Association assistance to make all the improvements that have been made.  This park is one of 16 Berkeley County public parks and it is the most heavily used facility in our county.

War Memorial has become host to countless family reunions, field trips, daily outings and company picnics.  Each year residents and visitors enjoy special events such as the Memorial Day Breakfast, Concerts in the Park, June Jubilee, July Fourth, Labor Day Breakfast, and Apple Harvest Celebration.  Participants in the annual March of Dimes Walk, Alzheimer’s Memory Walk, and Breast Cancer Walk meet at the park to begin their day.  Each summer almost 1,000 children participate in the swim lessons held at the pool.  People go to the park to play a round of mini-golf, sand volleyball, tennis and basketball.  During the fall, special needs children attend pre-kindergarten in the multipurpose at the bath house.  From dawn to dusk, anytime the weather is nice, the park is alive.
